Depressants

(Alcohol, Benzodiazepines, Opioids)

  • Slows down brain function
  • Drowsiness and lack of coordination
  • Relief of anxiety (initially)
Long-term Risks: High risk of addiction, respiratory depression (slowed breathing that can be fatal), liver damage, and severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures. They dull the senses and can lead to coma or death when mixed.

Stimulants

(Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Nicotine, ADHD meds)

  • Increases alertness and energy
  • Elevated heart rate and blood pressure
  • Decreased appetite
Long-term Risks: Heart attack, stroke, extreme weight loss, tooth decay (meth mouth), severe anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations. The "crash" after use leads to severe depression and exhaustion.

Hallucinogens

(LSD, Psilocybin, PCP, DMT)

  • Alters perception of reality
  • Auditory and visual hallucinations
  • Nausea and increased heart rate
Long-term Risks: Persistent psychosis, flashbacks (HPPD), and impaired memory. While some are not physically addictive, they can trigger underlying mental health issues like schizophrenia in vulnerable individuals.

Dissociatives

(Ketamine, DXM, Salvia)

  • Distorts sight and sound
  • Feelings of detachment from body
  • Numbness and loss of coordination
Long-term Risks: Memory loss, cognitive decline, and bladder/kidney issues (specifically with Ketamine). Users may enter a "K-hole" where they feel completely disconnected from reality, increasing accident risks.

Myth vs. Fact

Separate the truth from the misconceptions surrounding drug use.

Myth: "Drugs only affect you while you are high."

Many drugs create permanent changes to brain chemistry, affecting memory, learning, and mood regulation years after stopping.

Fact: "Your brain keeps developing until your mid-20s."

Introducing drugs during adolescence can permanently alter the brain's reward system and impulse control structures.

Myth: "I can stop anytime; I'm not addicted."

Addiction is a chronic disease. Physical dependence can happen quickly, and the brain's wiring makes "stopping" extremely difficult without help.

Fact: "Prescription drugs can be just as addictive as street drugs."

Opioid painkillers and stimulants prescribed by doctors act on the same brain pathways as heroin and cocaine.

Myth: "Drugs make me more social and fun."

Substances often lower inhibitions in unhealthy ways, leading to regret, damaged relationships, and social isolation in the long run.

Fact: "Most youth do not use drugs."

Despite media portrayal, statistics show the majority of young people choose not to use illicit substances.
